MP Letter
I am writing to you as your constituent and as a proud citizen of the United Kingdom. A key value of being British is our commitment to animal welfare. As an adherent of the Sikh faith, this is also an integral part of our beliefs. As you will be aware, there is a significant campaign and widespread public demand across the UK to ban non-stun slaughter, where animals have their throats slit while still alive. The Sikh community echo these demands, as animal welfare is paramount and non-negotiable. The Sikh community are leading a campaign to introduce the Sikh method of slaughter for food, known as Jhatka, which is considered the gold standard for instantaneous slaughter of an animal. Jhatka involves 100% irreversible, full stunning followed by decapitation, as opposed to the industry-standard practice of throat slitting. This initiative is being led by the Sikh community organisation, Jhatka Council. This campaign is being strongly supported by the MP for Smethwick, Gurinder Singh Josan CBE. I would therefore request that you get in touch with him to explore how my voice, as your constituent, can be heard in support of this matter. The Sikh community are not permitted to consume non-Jhatka meat; therefore, halal and kosher meat cannot be eaten by Sikhs. I would like to reiterate that Jhatka involves 100% full, irreversible stunning followed by decapitation, ensuring that the animal is not alive and that the highest standards of welfare are upheld. Thank you for your time and consideration.
